Junior Material Scientist / Chemist (M/F/X)- Permanent Contract Full-Time – Brussels  - 0-2 years experience

Want to do research that actually matters?

Real lab work, on a technology that exists nowhere else: polymers that heal themselves.

Why this role exists

Our client is a Belgian university spin-off commercialising a self-healing polymer technology for bike and car tyres. The technology is ready. The market is approaching. The R&D team is growing to accelerate testing, formulation optimisation, and scale-up.

This is the right place for someone curious, rigorous, and ready to learn fast, and to actually see the impact of their work.

What you'll do day to day

  • Synthesise, formulate and optimise polymer systems with various additives for tyre applications
  • Characterise materials: mechanical testing, thermal analysis, rheology, healing efficiency and durability
  • Evaluate finished layers: puncture, fatigue, ageing and quality control protocols
  • Support the translation from lab-scale to pilot and industrial processing, alongside manufacturing partners
  • Document protocols rigorously and contribute to data management

Your profile

  • Bachelor's or Master's in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or Polymer Science
  • 0–2 years of experience - an internship or thesis in polymers / soft materials is a strong plus
  • Comfortable in the lab, rigorous about protocols and data traceability
  • Fluent English; Dutch or French is a plus
  • A team player who is curious, reliable, and motivated to learn fast in a startup-paced environment

What's in it for you

  • A real learning curve on materials few people in the world master
  • Direct impact: you work on a product heading to market
  • Strong mentorship within a tight, interdisciplinary technical team
  • Full-time permanent contract + standard Belgian benefits (meal vouchers, eco-cheques, hospitalisation and group insurance, public transport reimbursement)

Not for you if…

This is a startup: priorities shift, protocols are still being built, and you'll need to be self-directed and resourceful. If you need a highly structured environment with well-oiled processes, it might not be the right timing.
